De Buck Gallery is pleased to announce its first participation in Expo Chicago. The gallery will be showing a duo presentation by emerging African American artists Rashaad Newsome and Devan Shimoyama . Their work offers a contemporary social commentary on identity politics and non-binary thinking. Rashaad Newsome’s works play with the idea of agency, presenting interpretations of feminism by trans- and cis-gender women of color. Furthermore, throughout his electric collage, video, performance, and sculptural work, the artist aims to re-center blackness in Art History. Gender, sexuality, identity, race, and agency all reflect a complex intersectionality that sheds light on how these social constructs are navigated nowadays. Simultaneously, Devan Shimoyama’s textural paintings explore at once a personal quest for understanding his origins and identity, but also in a broader context investigate the politics of black, queer culture. Using a variety of “effeminate” materials Shimoyama showcases the vulnerable relationship between celebration and silence in queer culture and sexuality, challenging traditional notions of masculinity. Both artists complement one another and will remind the viewer of a powerful social and political dialogue that we feel is relevant. This presentation will be timely given that Devan Shimoyama will be having a solo-exhibition titled “Cry, Baby” at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh opening on October 13, 2018.
